MPOX

What is MPOX?

MPOX, formerly known as Monkey-pox, is a rare infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It primarily affects humans and shares similarities with smallpox, as the virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus family, which includes the variola virus and the vaccinia virus. The disease begins with flu-like symptoms and progresses to the development of a rash, along with lymphadenopathy. While human-to-human transmission is rare, the disease can spread through contact with infected animals or humans, as well as through respiratory droplets. Due to its potential bioterrorism threat, efforts to understand and control the disease have been intensified.

What are some common symptoms?

MPOX is a viral disease similar to smallpox. Common symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. After contracting the mpox virus, symptoms usually appear within 6 to 13 days (though it can range from 5 to 21 days). A rash often follows, affecting areas like the face, palms, soles of feet, genitalia, and eyes. The rash evolves through stages of macules, papules, vesicles, and pustules before eventually drying up and falling off. Fortunately, mpox is rarely fatal, and symptoms typically resolve without treatment within 2 to 4 weeks.

How can I avoid MPOX?

To lower your risk of getting MPOX, follow these steps: avoid contact with infected people, practice good hygiene, stay away from animals suspected of carrying the virus, and monitor your health. Stay updated on the latest news and advice from health authorities, and maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress. Additionally, keep your living and working spaces clean and well-ventilated to reduce airborne particles. If you have any concerns, consult a healthcare provider.
